Working with New Mexico Dachshund Rescue has been immensely rewarding, intensely challenging, sometimes heartbreaking and always uplifting.   Pictured is Alex, one of 9 females recently rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri.    Alex arrived about 5 days ago and will be staying with me until her forever home is found.  The $75 was used to offset the cost of teeth cleaning for each of the dogs.  During her time with me, I will attempt to housetrain her, get her used to a leash, and expose her to the things she has never experienced because her life (7 years, we think) has been spent in a cage producing puppies.  That includes sounds, sights, smells and surfaces that are common to us, but unknown to her.  She is playful with other dogs, quick to learn, and food motivated.  Our greatest challenge is her extreme fear of being touched, as she does not equate the human touch with anything positive.  We already have made strides in getting her to accept, if not yet to seek out, being touched and held.

Each rescued dog is spayed/neutered, given inoculations, tested for heartworm, and receive teeth cleaning if needed.  They are then placed in foster homes (for which we always have a need!) and a photo and description is placed on our websitewww.newmexicodachshundrescue.org stating they are ready for adoption.  Potential adopters are screened and a home visit done.  Our adopters have hearts as large and loving as those of the dogs they adopt.  I am blessed to be involved with this effort and we greatly appreciate Modrall Sperling’s generous contribution to our work!
