Bonnie – Adopted!!!

Bonnie1 Bonnie2 Bonnie3Bonnie is a 14 year old red and white piebald/dapple female dachshund. She came into rescue with Clyde after their owners dumped them at a shelter in Oklahoma. Over the next two weeks they were in 3 different shelters in Oklahoma and Texas before some wonderful local rescuers pulled them and transported them to NMDR. Both dogs had kennel cough, an upper respiratory infection, and an intestinal virus when they arrived in New Mexico. We assume these illnesses came from the shelters. Bonnie was clearly the sickest of the two. They spent 8 days living at the local vet office where they received medications and Bonnie received subcutaneous fluids to keep her alive. Bonnie is spayed, up to date on all her shots, and is heartworm negative. She also had severely infected teeth and gums when we got her so she has had a recent dental cleaning where she lost most of her teeth. She is left with her two bottom canine teeth and 3 front teeth. Since all her back teeth and her upper canines are missing, her bottom canine teeth constantly stick out of her lips. Her foster mom’s son thinks this makes her look like a javelina… She certainly does not have the personality of a javelina though. She absolutely loves to follow her humans around. She has some vision and hearing loss due to her old age but it doesn’t slow her down. She can still see large objects and movements and turns her head when you speak. As the pictures show, Bonnie came into NMDR very emaciated with all of her ribs, hips, and spine showing. Due to Clyde’s obsession with humping female dogs, Bonnie was very stressed out and would not eat. It wasn’t until she was separated from Clyde for a full day that she started to eat. She now eats 2 full large cans of dog food every day and is slowly putting on weight. We will post more pictures of her soon. As soon as she gets to a healthy weight she will only need one can of dog food a day to maintain it. Bonnie LOVES to follow her people around as they work around the house and the yard. There is nothing she would love more than to find the lap of a loving retired person to keep warm for the rest of her life. She also LOVES to have her ears scratched and is generally a very happy, sweet, tiny little girl. Bonnie is being fostered in Fort Stanton and her adoption fee is $100.
