Lula is a six year old, eleven pound female dachshund. She is a beautiful smooth haired black and tan tweenie Dachshund. She arrived at my home 6 days ago after spending some time at the Aztec Shelter, where she was surrendered. Aztec reported that she did not do well with dogs her size or smaller but she did shared a kennel with a larger dog.
She is housebroken and very quickly learned how to use a doggie door. She is crate trained and is currently using the crate at night only. A couple of treats in the crate & she enters it easily. She is quiet & sleeps all night long. She knows a few basic commands like sit & come, when she’s not distracted. She is treat oriented when the distraction isn’t overwhelming. She is in the process of learning to be more consistent & to expand her basic commands. She is a fast learner. She has been left alone for several hours, with free range of the house & doggie door. She did excellent and was found snoozing in a chair, when I returned home.
She loves to cuddle and loves belly rubs but also likes to find a comfy chair where she can watch over the action in the house. She enjoys walks and walks well on the leash most of the time. She prefers quiet residential walks (but don’t we all). She is startled by traffic noise & people & dogs walking nearby. She has the dachshund squat down pat at those times. Good thing she is light! She is working on continuing the walk, after the source has moved on. She is hesitant about strangers approaching her but if they respect her space, she does fine. She enjoys walks and walks well on the leash. She prefers quiet residential walks (but don’t we all). She can be startled by traffic noise & people & dogs walking nearby.
She does not like cats or small dogs, and would most likely do best as an “only” pampered dog or possibly in a home with a larger dog. She has not been tested with children, but I have a feeling children might fall in the “small dog” category for her. She does plays gently and takes treats and her meals gently. She is waiting to go to the vet for her checkup and to see if she has been spayed. Once she has been given the green light health wise and possibly spayed if needed, she will be looking for someone with room in their home & heart. She’s being fostered in Albuquerque and her adoption fee is $250.
