Harley – ADOPTED!!!

Allow us to introduce everyone to Harley, a 10-year-old, neutered, black and tan, long haired, male tweenie. Harley is 100% sweetness with not a mean bone in his body. He’s like a living, breathing, soulful stuffed animal who looks like a puppy, is so cuddly, loves to be loved and petted, and gives great kisses. Harley is the most quiet dachshund we’ve ever known. In fact, his foster mom says she’s never heard his bark but apparently he has one that was heard by her mom when he was at her house one day. Stinker! His eyes and body language communicate loudly so he doesn’t really need to vocalize anyway. He moves through the house very quietly but he will crine (cry/whine) when he thinks he may be left behind. Harley really enjoys car rides and gets excited at the prospect of going for a ride. He follows his foster mom everywhere and wants to be everywhere she is. We’ve not seen Harley around children but he is not aggressive in the least and would probably do fine in a home with children as long as he was treated with kindness and respect.

Harley was living with several doxie brothers prior to being surrendered by his owner. Despite being picked on and bullied by his brothers, Harley gets along well with other dogs and doesn’t seem to mind or really pay attention to cats. He doesn’t have a broad knowledge about being a dog because of the neglected and sheltered life he lived but he is interested in learning new things and he stays open to new experiences. His curiosity seems to be blossoming. He uses a doggie door and does not potty in the house or walk around marking his territory everywhere. When Harley came to us he was overweight at 18.6lbs, had layers of matted hair and really dry skin, and he couldn’t eat because his mouth was so infected. After almost all of his teeth were removed and his mouth healed, Harley’s appetite proved intact. He’s now learning what “No begging” means. His energy has increased since taking medication for a low thyroid and his weight has started to come down, too. He is currently 16lbs.  Harley will chew hard treats because he uses the few bottom back teeth that remain but he prefers to eat his meals of hard dog food mixed with water. Harley’s shots are up-to-date, his skin is soft, his hair is growing back after it was cut, and he is medically stable, but he does need thyroid pills twice a day. He also needs help getting down a couple more pounds which will likely happen when we hit the precise dosage of thyroid meds. Harley is unable to jump up on furniture (probably because of his weight or lack of muscle strength) but he has learned to use doggy stairs. He does not burrow nor does he sleep in bed with humans, apparently preferring his own doggie bed or the couch where his foster mom has been sitting instead. Harley is learning to play with his foster sisters but he isn’t quite sure what to make of their efforts yet. He loves going for walks and that is when he is most assertive, lunging out in front forging the way. He’s learning how to walk properly via a few of Cesar’s tips and is a quick study. Harley’s adorable factor is way above any his foster mom has ever seen. He is a vulnerable and sensitive little guy who has a lot of love to give the right furever family. He is pure love and is the perfect companion for humans who are not afraid to love unconditionally too. Harley is being fostered in Albuquerque and his adoption fee is $200
