We would like to introduce you to Leslie, a recent rescue who comes to us as an Owner Surrender… her fur dad fell and broke his hip causing him to stay at the hospital for a long time. She is a 4 year old black and tan Dachshund mix, who has the big bone structure that suggests she might have some Rottweiler ancestors.  Leslie currently weighs about 30 pounds so she is on a weight reduction program with a trimming diet and exercise with my foster siblings.    She was originally rescued by a shelter near Dallas, TX where she was transferred to a terrific rescue in upstate New York and moved to New Mexico all within the last 9 months when her dad went to the hospital.  She is current on her shots, has been spayed, and is heartworm negative.  She is a big girl (about the size of a standard dachshund), but she is sweet, likes to cuddle and kiss her foster family, and gets along well with most dogs.  Since she apparently has been an only girl, she may not adjust easily to new canine friends who want to prove that they are superior, especially if they are bigger than her.  Being an only pup to an adoptive family may be best for her, although with encouragement from her foster parents she is learning to get along with a bossy canine foster sister.  She understands what the pet door is for so she has not had any accidents in her foster home.  Since she has access to the pet door, she frequently travels to and from the back yard to be with her foster siblings, to stroll in the sun, or to bark at marauding rabbit or Gambel’s quail that stroll across the back pasture.  She likes her pet bed (but not necessarily when it is in her kennel), but loves to sleep in the family bed where she keeps her foster dad’s back warm.  Leslie understands the basics of walking on a leash, understands some basic commands (sit, beg, no, stay, down), and she is just learning to play with her foster siblings who like to fetch and play tug of war.  She likes chew toys and tug of war with her foster parents.    Her perfect forever home might be as a single dog in an adult family, or family with teenage children.  She is being fostered in southern New Mexico.  Her adoption fee is $250.00.
