Ward was picked up as a stray in Las Cruces shortly after New Year’s Eve.  He is a smooth/short haired black and tan dachshund mixed breed, about 12 inches tall and currently weighs about 20 pounds.  We were told that Ward is 1-2 years old, but his medical records indicate he is 4 years old… he looks and acts young.  He is neutered and micro chipped, tested negative for heart worm, Lyme, erlichia and anaplasma, has been given Ivermectin for heart worm prevention, and all of his shots are current as of January 4, 2019.

     Ward is a handsome, well-mannered dog.  He appears to have had some basic command training (sit, shake, come, etc.) and so far he has not had any accidents in the house, although he hasn’t quite figured out the pet door during his first day in his foster home.  He is getting along well with the foster family’s dogs, who believe they have to guard the house and protect Dad.  Ward is learning to play pup games with his foster siblings.  He rides well in the car.  He rode home in a wire kennel, but doesn’t do well in an enclosed pet crate.  He loves to curl up on the couch to watch TV, likes to be cuddled and give wet kisses, and has bonded quickly with his foster dad.  He has taken well to walking on a leash with his 3 foster siblings, although he is still a little puppy goofy when walking in a group.  On his first night in foster care, he didn’t want to sleep in his kennel but adjusted quickly to sleeping on the family bed.

     So far, Ward is doing very well in his foster home.  He has a very expressive face, loves to be with his foster family (especially his foster dad), and is very quiet for a young doxie.  He is being fostered in southern New Mexico.  His adoption fee is $250.
